On Friday, November 18^th, 2011 at 6:30pm, we invite you to join us for the company’s Fall Showing hosted at the Gina Gibney Dance Center located at 890 Broadway on the 5^th floor.  Partnering with us is Jennifer George, an exquisite designer, specializing in clothing and jewelry creations. The holiday sale will run 12:00 – 8:00pm, and 10% of the proceeds from this event will be donated to Elisa Monte Dance.  Get your holiday shopping done early while supporting EMD!  There will be a cocktail reception following the showing,  giving supporters the opportunity to mingle with the dancers of Elisa Monte Dance!

Elisa Monte Dance performed a full evening concert in the Bryant Park Fall Festival this year!  The free, outdoor concert and event series ran from September 16^th – 23^rd.  The festival hosted eight after-work performances featuring artists from NYC’s premiere classical music, jazz, dance, and opera institutions as well as holding afternoon programs throughout the week.

EMD’s performance will took place Thursday September 22^nd from 6:00-7:30pm on the main lawn.  Thank you to all of those who came out on that beautiful night to support us!

Hampton Arts Tour, Performances September 24^th & 25^th – Hampton, VA

The company toured to Hampton Virginia in late September to perform at Hampton Arts.  The company performed Ms. Monte’s works, Tears Rolling, Treading, White Dragon, and Vejle.  The company also performed Ms. Rea-Fisher’s For Joy and Joe Celej’s the heart… for this tour.

Elisa has been my creative talisman since the inception of my career. When she chose me to premiere Treading with the Ailey Company in the 80′s, thus began a phenomenal creative partnership. I will always remember the intense and quite profound rehearsal period. The result was that Treading put me on the map, and my stock in the dance community went sky high. The karmic artistic connection that began then has continued to resonate each time I have been fortunate enough to work with Elisa.

Elisa and I were both lucky to have studied with the great Pilates Guru, Kathy Grant. She had a profound impact on both of us as well as anyone who was able to styudy with her. Last September people came from far and wide to celebrate her remarkable life. As Elisa’s company was one of her favorites, it was only fitting that they perform for her memorial. Elisa chose an excerpt from “Tears” and, as usual, it was a perfect choice. I remember thinking how much [EMD dancer] Rachel resembled a young Kathy. She would have loved the performance.

When Elisa asked me to be a part of the Anniversary, I accepted without blinking an eye. I assumed I was to be a part of the benefit committee, but when I received the call to begin rehearsal, I was taken for a loop and was a bit intimidated by watching the choreography again.

The rehearsals proved inspirational and transformative.  I had known Francesca Harper, the other guest, since she was a girl. Francesca’s mother, Denise Jefferson and Elisa used to dance in the same company, and Denise would bring Francesca with her to rehearsals in a bassinet.  The day Francesca brought her baby girl to our rehearsal, Elisa spoke warmly about those days where the roles were quite different, but scene much the same. Francesca and I had many emotional rehearsals. The tears were not tears of joy, but they were not sad tears either. As the [EMD] season was dedicated to Denise, and between these lifelong connections and the poignancy of the choreography and music, performing “Tears” again was one of the most cathartic experiences of my life.

I thank Elisa for reminding my how much I still love to dance.  Now a chapter that I thought was closed has found a new opening.

 EMD Junior Board Announces New Members

Our Junior Board welcomes Larkin Clark, Josh Feit, and Stacia Wood to the board this year.  Company member, Liz Beres will also be taking on the new role of Dancer Liaison to the Junior Board.  As we welcome new members, we also say goodbye to outgoing leadership.  Former Co-Chair Elia Monte-Brown will be moving out of her position to pursue educational goals.  We wish her the absolute best in her endeavors.  In this wake, Vanessa Fusco will be taking on the role singularly of Chair of the EMD Junior Board.

EMD Summer Choreography Workshop

June 27 – July 8, Monday – Friday, 10am – 1pm
This 10-day choreographic workshop offers a chance to develop your choreographic voice through a series of
movement labs, feedback sessions and facilitated discussions. Elisa Monte and five guest choreographers will
provide a range of choreographic approaches, processes and tools to generate movement and develop ideas.
An informal showing will take place at the end of the workshop to give participants a chance to show their work
and work in progress.

Guest choreographers include Kyle Abraham, Sidra Bell, Camille A. Brown, Nelly van Bommel and Pavel Zustiak.

As we embark on the start of our 30^th anniversary year we invite you to be a part of our SPRING SHOWING, which will be held Friday, May 21st, 2010 at 6:30pm at Red Bean Studios, 320 West 37^th (btwn 8^th and 9^th) on the 7^th Floor.

It’s a great opportunity for you to see new works-in-progress, and for our dancers to share their talent and passion in an informal studio setting.  The showing will feature three all-new pieces in an early stage of development. Share the first viewing of “Dialogue with Dying Languages,” Elisa’s new collaborative work with composer Kevin James and visual artist Philip Tsiaras. Through a preview performance and Q&A’s you will get a firsthand look at the creative process. The proceeds from this fundraiser help support the dancers’ salaries and are critical to ensure that our artists work as much as possible throughout the year. It is through your help that their art flourishes.

The internationally acclaimed Elisa Monte Dance Company will present another exciting season of dance including the New York Premiere’s of “Continuum” featuring a music commission by Joe Dalarda, “By Your Side”choreography by Associate Artistic Director Tiffany Rea-Fisher, and “Pockettangle”choreography by company member Joe Celej, “By Your Side” and  “Pockettangle” were both commissioned through the companies New Choreographers Fund.
